Over the years there have been a wealth of fad diets that have aimed at losing weight very quickly. Most of these diets are based upon questionable tactics that cause a nutritional deficit in the body. The two most fad of all diets that should be avoided are the Cabbage Soup Diet and the Grapefruit Diet.

The Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet is one of the first diets that claimed to offer weight loss on a very quick scale. The premise of the diet was to eat large amounts of vegetables that were added to an onion soup mis with tomato juice added.

The unhealthy nature of this diet lends the body to burn all of the carbohydrate reserves and expel large amounts of water in a short period of time. As soon as any normal eating choices are added back into the diet, the weight that is lost comes right back and the dieter is back at square one.

The Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet is the mother of all fad diets. This diet claims to speed up metabolism with the use of natural grapefruit. Over a period of 18 days, the original Grapefruit Diet offered the follower a plan of only 585 calories a day. Though the plan was modified to 800 calories in later years, the caloric intake is too low to maintain the healthy body one needs to keep the weight off once weight loss occurs.

As with the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Grapefruit Diet is all water loss and any normal eating will cause the weight to be regained quickly.

Fad diets are the few diets still out there that claim to offer the dieter a ton of weight loss very fast. The only real way to lose weight is to eat less and move more. The slow weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week is ideal for long term weight loss that stays off.
